"If you want to be a fisherman, get in a boat and go to the middle of the lake. You don't go to a farm."
- Michael J. Fox, Actor

We all have potential...it's up to us to create that potential by doing the right things. If we want to be fishermen, we need the right tools, the right equipment, and the right location. Additionally, a proactive attitude (things like persistence, patience, planning) helps as well.

Leadership is a combination of many small things all working in unison. The great thing about leadership is that we all have the potential to possess it to the degree we want to. It is nothing mysterious or out of reach.

Many leaders, I am convinced, use leadership qualities without thinking about it. They do things that help them complete tasks, interact with others, design strategies and solutions. Leadership then involves sets of skills that can be developed and nurtured over time.

Additionally, leadership is an attitude. In many ways it is an attitude of understanding. Understanding how to communicate with other people, co-workers, clients, prospective end users, shareholders, etc. Understanding that listening is usually more important than talking. Understanding the value of asking good questions. Understanding the importance of involving other people in the process. Understanding that people want to be heard and know that they and their input matters. Understanding that being a person of integrity says many things.

We all have the potential to be, provide and do leadership. One of my goals is to help people understand that "doing" leadership is probably not the goal. Once you have the right tools, background and training, you can likely do many things.

Leadership then is something you live. It's a combination of believing things and acting in congruous ways, creating environments that support individuals, providing resources to enhance people and performance, and motivating people while respecting their individuality.

In the end, leadership is everybody's responsibility.
