Manage People?!

How do you best manage people? You don't.

At times, we need to make tough decisions in the workplace. The biggest challenge is doing it with professionalism and effective leadership.

Too often, people want to manage other people by making decisions and taking action that alienates, frustrates or disappoints those they work with.

People don't want to be managed; they want to be led. For years I've been asking audiences to raise their hands if they like to be managed, forced, coerced, manipulated or made to do things. I haven't seen one hand.

Very often, it's easier to mange and just tell people what to do. "Do it this way," may be what is said but it often sounds like "Do it MY way."

Effective leaders provide direction when necessary but they use their words differently. They ask questions, invite ideas and encourage problem-solving strategies.

Leaders understand that to be effective, we manage things and lead people....not the other way around. In essence, an effective leader is one who can make decisions and take actions.

Ken Blanchard puts it best, "An empowering manager is coordinating efforts, acquiring resources, strategic planning, working with customers, coaching people, and the like. Everything you do is to help your people be more effective."
